The Mustang Tiji Festival is held annually in Lo Manthang, Mustang District, and is a three-day celebration known as “The Pursuing of the Evil Spirits.” This festival is at the heart of the Tiji Festival Trek, offering trekkers a unique cultural experience.
The legend behind Tiji tells of a god named Dorje Jongboo, who must battle his evil spirit father to save the Kingdom of Mustang from destruction. The demon father brought devastation to the kingdom by causing a severe shortage of water, a precious resource in this arid region, leading to widespread famine and hardship.
Originally known as the Tensi Ceremony Puja across the Mustang Valley, the festival is now widely referred to as the Tiji Festival. It showcases traditional rituals, dances, and ceremonies inspired by Tibetan Buddhism, providing visitors with a rare glimpse into the rich, ancient culture of Mustang.
