Overview
Lower Solukhumbu is the ancestral homeland of the Sherpa people, who migrated here from eastern Tibet over 500 years ago. Long before mountaineering brought global attention, this region was an important trade route between Nepal and Tibet, especially for salt, wool, and grain.
The area gained wider recognition when Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay passed through Lower Solukhumbu during the early Everest expeditions. Unlike Upper Khumbu, Lower Solukhumbu has retained its traditional lifestyle, with well-preserved monasteries, villages, and farming practices, offering visitors an authentic glimpse into Sherpa culture.
