Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trekking is one of the most exciting and scenic trekking destinations in eastern Nepal, near the border with Sikkim, India. Home to Mt. Kanchenjunga (8,586 m), the third-highest mountain in the world, this trek offers an adventurous journey through unspoiled landscapes. The trek presents a stunning variety of landscapes, cultures, and panoramic views of four of the world’s highest peaks, including Mt. Everest, Mt. Lhotse, Mt. Makalu, and of course, Mt. Kanchenjunga. The route passes through the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area (KCAP), covering 2,035 sq. km, which is rich in diverse wildlife such as snow leopards, Himalayan black bears, musk deer, red pandas, and numerous bird species including pheasants and the Red-billed Blue Magpie.
Along the way, trekkers also experience the unique lifestyles and cultures of local ethnic groups, including the Sherpa, Rai, and others. Overview
The Kanchenjunga Trek begins in Taplejung, which is reached via a 45-minute flight from Kathmandu to Bhadrapur, followed by a jeep journey to Birtamod and onward to Taplejung. The trek first takes you to the North Base Camp, offering spectacular views of Tent Peak, Nepal Peak, and Cross Peak before the towering presence of Kanchenjunga itself dominates the horizon.
After exploring Pangpema on the north side, the route returns to Ghunsa and then crosses the Mirgin La Pass to reach the south side of Kanchenjunga. From there, the trail continues through Ramche and Oktang, where trekkers are treated to breathtaking views of Kanchenjunga’s imposing South-West face. This circuit provides a comprehensive experience of both the north and south perspectives of the mountain, combining scenic landscapes with remarkable Himalayan vistas.
