Annapurna Expedition

45 Days 44 Nights

Annapurna Expedition (8091m) is the 10th highest mountain in the world and the eighth highest in Nepal. Although Annapurna I is the lowest 8000m peak, it is considered one of the most technically challenging mountains in the Himalayas. The first successful ascent was achieved by Maurice Herzog and Louis Lachenal on June 3, 1950. The peak was not summited again until 1970, when climbers successfully ascended via the Northwest Ridge. Annapurna I is located at 28°35’45”N 83°49’20”E.

Overview

Maurice Herzog’s Annapurna Expedition remains a notable irony in the history of mountaineering. Although Annapurna, the 10th-highest mountain in the world, was the first 8000-metre peak ever climbed, it has since gained a reputation for its extremely high fatality rate and has seen far fewer successful ascents than other 8000-metre mountains. The mountain is rarely attempted, and summits are uncommon. Its steep and technically demanding terrain, unpredictable weather, and high avalanche risk make the Annapurna Expedition one of the most difficult and dangerous mountaineering challenges in the Himalayas—and indeed the world—despite its relatively “modest” height of 8091 metres.
