Dhaulagiri Expedition

45 Days 44 Nights

Dhaulagiri, one of Nepal’s most formidable peaks, is renowned for its sheer size and challenging climbs. The first successful ascent was achieved in 1960, marking a historic milestone in mountaineering. Towering over 7,000 meters above the Kali Gandaki Valley, the mountain stretches an impressive 30 km, making it a truly massive massif. Most climbers follow the “Normal Route,” the path of the first ascent, though other routes have been established from nearly every direction.

The Dhaulagiri massif features five prominent ridges and two main faces on its south and west aspects, each rising approximately 4,000 meters from their respective base camps. The massif also consists of five major summits:

  • Dhaulagiri I: 8,167 m
  • Dhaulagiri II: 7,751 m
  • Dhaulagiri III: 7,715 m
  • Dhaulagiri IV: 7,661 m
  • Dhaulagiri V: 7,618 m

Surrounding the 8,000-meter peak are notable mountains, including Churen Himal Main (7,371 m), Gurja Himal (6,342 m), Putha Hiunchuli (7,246 m), and Junction Peak (4,235 m).

Overview

Dhaulagiri is the seventh-highest mountain in the world, standing at 8,167 meters (26,795 feet) above sea level. Located in the Dhaulagiri Himal range of north-central Nepal, it is part of the greater Himalayan mountain range. The name Dhaulagiri means “White Mountain” in Sanskrit, reflecting its snow-covered peaks and extensive glaciers.

The mountain lies in the northwestern corridor of Nepal in the Myagdi District and stretches approximately 120 km from the Kali Gandaki River to the Bheri River in the west. Dhaulagiri is also the highest point in the Gandaki River Basin.

Just 34 km east of Dhaulagiri I lies Annapurna I, forming a dramatic natural divide between the two giants. The deep valley carved between them is the Kali Gandaki Gorge, recognized as the deepest gorge in the world, with the Kali Gandaki River flowing through its depths.
